Robotic Surgery
The gold standard treatment for patients with uterine, vaginal vault or recurrent prolapse is the sacrocolpopexy. This is when the vagina (colpo) is fixed up (pexy) to a ligament of the tailbone (sacrum). Traditionally this is done with a large abdominal incision along the bikini line.
da Vinci® Robotic technology enables a minimally invasive technique for doing the same surgery. Five small incisions are made on the abdomen. Through a camera placed inside the abdomen, the doctor is able to perform the procedure with long instrumentation. Studies have shown that using the robotic technique for this complex surgery has resulted in less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay without sacrificing comparable outcomes to the traditional method.
If you are considering surgery for prolapse, discuss this option with your doctor.
