Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Prolapse is a herniation of pelvic organs through the vagina. This is caused by weakened or torn pelvic support structures. Prolapse is described by their vaginal compartment (anterior, apical, posterior, lateral), or by the protruding organ (bladder, small bowel, rectum, uterus, cervix).
Treatment options include pelvic floor rehabilitation, pessary use, and surgical intervention. Surgeries can be performed vaginally, through minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy or robotics, or an abdominal incision. The urogynecologist will explain the different options and work with you to decide on which option is best for you.
