Pressure Ulcer Management
Pressure sores (also called bed sores) can develop when an individual lies in one position for extended periods, has friction between skin and clothing or has damp bedding or clothing on the skin for a lengthy timeframe. When the weight of the body is against the damp, frictious or solid material for prolonged periods, the pressure can cut off blood supply in that area, resulting in a pressure sore. Individuals most likely to experience a pressure sore typically have conditions related to atheroma, a coma, diabetes, dehydration, incontinence, paralysis, smoking or weakness.
There are four stages of pressure sores. If left untreated, pressure sores will progress from stage one into stages two, three and eventually four. Stage four pressure sores can cause the following:
- Deep tissue infection
- Bone infection
- Blood infection
- Flesh-eating bacteria
These conditions can be life-threatening and can result in limb loss and even cancer.
WakeMed Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery can perform surgical procedures that restore blood flow to the affected area and prevent onset of serious disease.
