Office Visits & Vaccinations
Well Visits
WakeMed Children’s — Pediatric Primary Care is pleased to offer well visits to children in Wake and Johnston counties at our Raleigh and Clayton locations. During this visit, our pediatricians perform the following tasks:
- Review your child's overall health and vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure).
- Check your child from head to toe — including a height and weight check to make sure physical development is on track.
- Assess all major systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous and gastrointestinal) to identify potential health problems.
- Perform routine blood work to assess for certain blood disorders like anemia or high cholesterol, lead poisoning and any other nutritional disorders (if necessary).
We maintain an open line of communication, so we can be a partner in caring for your child’s health.
Infants and toddlers need check-ups more frequently, sometimes as often as every 1-3 months. Older children benefit from a full check-up once a year.
Screenings
We can perform screening tests any time throughout the year or during an annual Well Visit. All children are also screened for dental health; our pediatricians may recommend in-office fluoride varnish for toddlers.
Children should be screened regularly for vision and hearing. Children should also be screened to identify any problems with behavior or development.
Sick Visits & Disease Management
Sick Visits
Don’t worry! Because kids are in school with lots of other kids and germs, getting sick is common. Our pediatricians in Raleigh and Clayton leave room in each day for unexpected sick and urgent care visits. Got the flu, ear or upper respiratory infections, rashes, or bumps and bruises? We’re here to help (with all of that and more).
If your child is sick, call our office to speak with a triage nurse who will offer home care instructions or schedule a sick visit. After hours, our triage nurses can guide you to the best urgent care option for your child.
Disease/Condition Management & Behavioral Health
Our pediatricians are here to help your child manage diseases or conditions such as asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We specialize in educating parents and kids about their conditions, medications and how to best manage their health. What’s more, we tap into WakeMed Children’s wide network of specialists, including experts on behavioral and mood concerns, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists and neuropsychologists. If your child’s condition requires specific expertise, we partner with you and your child’s specialists to create a care plan.
Vaccinations
We want you to stay healthy! Vaccinations are an important way to keep your child’s body free from disease. WakeMed Children’s — Pediatric Primary Care is here to help your child stay protected and on-track with vaccinations, from birth until they go to college, so you don’t have to worry.
Important Vaccines for Children
Most children receive the majority of their important vaccines between birth and 6 years old. These vaccinations protect kids against many diseases:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Whooping cough
- Measles
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Polio
- Rotavirus
- Chicken pox
- Diphtheria
- Influenza
- Pneumonia
It’s important for our providers to get a full record of our young patients’ immunization schedule to ensure they are properly protected against these conditions. Learn more about preparing for your visit.
As kids grow and change, so do their vaccines. Vaccines recommended for children in their pre-teen and adolescent years protect against these diseases:
- Tetanus
- Diphtheria
- Acellular pertussis
- Meningococcal disease
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
We offer all of these and more.
Other vaccines, such as those that protect against the flu, can be given every year at our locations in Raleigh and Clayton. We usually have flu shots for patients prior to the start of every flu season. This can depend on seasonal availability; please call for an appointment and to learn more.
North Carolina Public School Requirements
North Carolina requires all children to receive certain vaccines in order to participate in public school. Parents must update their child’s vaccine records upon entering Kindergarten and upon entering 7th grade. We are happy to partner with you to be sure your child is up to date.
College Students
Most students preparing for college must provide comprehensive immunization records to their college or university prior to enrolling. We are happy to partner with your student to be sure all vaccines are up-to-date, and to provide full documentation as they prepare for college admission.
WakeMed Children’s is strongly committed to the health and safety of our patients. Our goal is to protect our patients from life-threatening diseases by requiring that all patients meet the minimum vaccination requirements published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). All pediatric patients are expected to meet the minimum vaccination requirements outlined in this policy to maintain WakeMed Children’s as their pediatric provider. Patients who do not meet the minimum requirements outlined in this policy will be subject to dismissal from the practice.
